History
Constructed in 1972 by the abundant Filipino-Chinese community of Cebu, this temple stands dramatically at an altitude of 110 metres (360 ft) above sea level. The multicolored edifice can be reached through three winding roads and is sure to captivate visitors with its impressive multi-tiered design. Unlike its neighbor, the Phu Sian Temple, the Taoist temple opens its doors to believers and non-believers.
The temple is a sacred space of veneration for Taoism, the faith based on Lao Zi’s teachings. Every Wednesday and Sunday, devotees ascend 81 steps (mirroring the 81 chapters in this religion’s scriptures) to pray with joss sticks and have their fortune interpreted by monks. From guide books and travel agencies to grade school excursions, the temple in Cebu City is a highly sought-after destination.
Its entrance replicates China’s iconic Great Wall of China while its interiors boast an array of features such as a chapel, library, souvenir shop and wishing well – not to mention breathtaking views from the balconies that overlook Downtown Cebu. One visit won’t be enough.
